A TORCHBEARER paid a visit to a care home to give residents an Olympic treat.

Stewart Bethell, of Ipswich, was part of the torch relay in Bury St Edmunds after being nominated by Martin and Hayley Shave for his commitment to fundraising and supporting children’s brain tumour charity Camille’s Appeal.

Stewart, who is a volunteer fundraising manager for Camille’s Appeal, visited residents and staff at Hawthorn Drive Residential Home.

The home’s oldest resident, Ruby Gardener, 99, was delighted to be able to hold the torch.

Stewart said: “Over the past three years I have spent the majority of my free time identifying ways to raise both the profile of the charity and funds to support the recovery of children following brain tumour treatment.

“The manner in which the Olympics and torch relay have inspired people is truly amazing.”

Since the run, Stewart has been touring the region with his torch, visiting schools, village fetes, residential homes and hospital wards.

He said: “Some of the children I met were undergoing cancer treatment and battle daily to overcome this illness, but seeing their faces illuminated and shining in the reflection of the torch is one that will stay with me forever.”

To date, Stewart has raised more than 2,500 for Camille’s Appeal through visits with the torch to local businesses and events.
