FUNDRAISERS are encouraged to saddle up for a popular sponsored pedal in support of Suffolk’s many places of worship.

The Suffolk Historic Churches Trust (SHCT) is holding its 31st cycle ride on Saturday, September 8.

This year 728 places of worship are taking part in the event, which has raised 3.5m since it began. Organisers are now keen to encourage as many people as possible to take part or turn out in support.

Cyclists can visit as many churches as they like - either being sponsored per church or for the whole ride.

Half the money raised will go to the parish or parishes of their choice and the other half to the SHCT, which awards it to churches that apply for a grant. Last year 3,000 people were involved in the ride - either pedalling through the countryside or as volunteers sitting in churches and signing people in.

Patrick Grieve, chairman of the SHCT Bike Ride, said: “Hundreds of churches rely upon grants from the trust to enable them to keep the buildings repaired for future generations. We would love some more people to take part. It is our only fundraiser so we depend on it completely. You could go to 10, 20 or 30 churches - it’s completely down to the individual. It’s not a race. People can start and finish where they like. It depends how energetic they are feeling. Not only does it raise vital funds but it’s a great way to have fun and keep fit.”
