ART students from King Edward VI school in Bury St Edmunds have created a stunning mural to celebrate the town hosting the Rwandan Olympics Team.

The colourful fresco features Rwandan landmarks alongside images of well-known Bury buildings, such as a silhouette of the cathedral and has now been erected near the Mustow Street entrance to Abbey Gardens.

“The students have embraced this opportunity and worked as a team to research and refine their ideas,” said acting head of visual arts, Donna Marshall.

To accompany the mural, volunteers from the Church Walks Charities have established a flowerbed made up of plants that are either indigenous to Rwanda or commonly grown in the central African country. According to Simon Harding, who together with Valerie Legg donated the plants, species included in the bed include Eucalyptus bushes, Senecio bushes, Red Hot Pokers and Pyrethrums.

He said: “They are all perennial, so the bed will become a permanent feature in the gardens.”

The flowerbed and mural will be formally opened by the Rwandan Deputy High Commissioner for Rwanda, Linda Kalimba, who is due to visit the site along with the Rwandan Olympic team on Saturday.
