WE are going out for revenge.

That is the message from the Barnsley camp who will come to Portman Road tomorrow looking to avenge December’s thrilling 5-3 defeat at the hands of Paul Jewell’s side.

It was a defining moment in Jewell’s tenure with fears that he might walk away – or be sacked – after seven straight defeats and his team 2-0 down at the interval.

But five second half goals changed the atmosphere among Town fans and earned the Blues boss a repreive.

For Barnsley, any pre-match talk of the play-offs quickly ended with the Tykes winning just five matches since that extraordinary televised game.

It is little surprise then that Barnsley are heading to Suffolk with revenge on their minds.

Veteran striker Andy Gray said: “All of us have been looking forward to play Ipswich again to get back at them. It was a tough one to take and this match will be another hard game.

“Ipswich are a good team with some experienced players. I actually fancied them to go up at the start of the season but they struggled at first. They are on good form now and we will have to be at our best.”

Reflecting on that 5-3 defeat, Tykes boss Keith Hill admitted: “We were shell-shocked after we conceded five goals against them last time. We were in control at half-time then fell apart in the second half.”

The visit of Barnsley offers fond memories for Town fitness coach Andy Liddell who was an integral part of the Tykes when they achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 1997/98.

Liddell said: “It was fantastic to play for a club like that especially when we got to the Premier League. Nobody thought that a club of that size would get to the Premier League and we did it.

“I know they’ve been struggling a little bit with results but they got a good win the other week and Keith Hill is doing a fantastic job there with a limited budget.

“They play good football, they have good players so it’ll be a hard game for Ipswich. But it will be a hard game for Barnsley as well.”
