DONCASTER Rovers chief executive Dave Morris has written to his Ipswich Town counterpart Simon Clegg praising the Blues support of striker Billy Sharp.
Despite seeing their side fall two-goals behind to the division’s bottom club after just 24 minutes on Saturday, Town fans rose as one to applaud Sharp’s headed finish in a poignant moment.
The 25-year-old pointed to the heavens in celebration following the death of his newborn son the previous weekend.
When later substituted, Sharp – a player Blues boss Paul Jewell tried to sign in the summer – applauded all four sides of Portman Road, who later chanted ‘sign him up’.
Sharp himself admitted afterwards that the moment brought a lump to his throat, with Rovers boss Dean Saunders also praising the home support’s gesture.
The letter from Doncaster’s Morris to Clegg reads: “I would like to say how much we appreciate your magnificent fans and the way they responded to our team, and in particular Billy Sharp.
“Their behaviour and attitude was an absolute credit to football and to your club.”
