IPSWICH Town manager Paul Jewell says pace is the key asset he now wants to add to his side before the start of the new Championship season.

Michael Chopra – one of five summer signings at Portman Road – enjoyed a dream debut in Holland yesterday, scoring both goals as the Blues got their pre-season off to a winning start at Dutch second tier side FC Eindhoven.

Lee Bowyer, Aaron Cresswell and Nathan Ellington also made their first appearances in a Town shirt during the routine 2-0 victory, but Jewell is by no means finished in the transfer market yet though.

“We’re looking for all sorts of players,” said the Liverpudlian, who wasn’t able to give Ivar Ingimarsson his debut due to a thigh injury.

“We’ve got that experience now, so perhaps we now need to add that bit of pace to the team.”

Jewell confirmed earlier this week that he has bids in for a striker and a winger, with subsequent reports linking the Suffolk club with Watford front man Marvin Sordell and Doncaster wide player James Coppinger – a player Town have already had a bid rejected for this summer.

“We made an offer for a wide player on Friday and I’m still waiting for the owner to come back to us to see if it’s been accepted,” said Jewell, who refused to be drawn on specific names.

“It’s the same situation with the striker.”

Meanwhile, Jewell played down reports that newly-promoted Premier League club Swansea had made a bid to bring striker Jason Scotland back to the Liberty Stadium.

“There’s ben no contact as far as I’m aware,” he said.

“We’ve not had any offers for players and I wouldn’t encourage any. I am more interested in buying players than selling any.”
