CONNOR Wickham’s hopes of impressing England Under-21s boss Stuart Pearce were dealt a blow after he failed to get on during the Three Lions’ 2-0 win over Norway.

The Ipswich striker went into this afternoon’s match having been linked with a 8 million move to Liverpool just 24 hours before.

But he was unable to show his credentials as Pearce went with a fluid front three of Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck and Danny Rose.

And it was the Tottenham winger who struck a superb solo goal as England cruised to victory in their final friendly before the European Under-21s Championship.

Rose cut inside before unleashing an unstoppable right foot shot into the far corner to give England a comfortable 2-0 lead at the break – Sturridge taping home the first after good work from Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand.

England made five changes at the break and later replaced Sturridge with Aston Villa forward Nathan Delfouneso.

But Wickham remained on the bench, the only outfield player not to get any pitch time, and with play-off hero Scott Sinclair still to return, you have to question how much football the teenager will see once the tournament kicks off in Denmark next week.

This might not be a bad thing for Town fans wanting to hang on to their talented striker.

It is thought that Ipswich won’t sell the 18-year-old for 8 million and Liverpool – or any other club for that matter – will surely wait and see how he performs in the European Championships before deciding whether to up their bid.
