IPSWICH TOWN: For more than three decades he has lived the dream, reporting on the county’s hottest sporting action and rubbing shoulders with a string of stars.

But now long-serving Ipswich Town reporter, Elvin King, has put away his notepad and pen and retired from the coveted role.

And here, in two exclusive videos, Elvin looks back over his career covering Ipswich Town, noting the highs and the lows, the best players, goals and moments.

Elvin, 65 last week, was born at Pin Mill and joined the Star’s advertising department in 1972 before gleefully moving into the sports team – and fulfilling a childhood dream in the process – in 1978.

He watched while senior colleagues followed the Blues around Europe during the club’s glory days and then eventually had the pleasure of becoming the Evening Star’s main man at Portman Road.

But it has not just been the times at Town he will remember, Elvin has also been a key player in improving the coverage of non-league football in Suffolk, has covered many thrilling nights of Speedway with the Ipswich Witches and has also reported on a range of other sports.

He was given a fitting send-off by colleagues at the Star and EADT’s Lower Brook Street HQ last Friday and is now preparing for a well-earned break, but has promised to follow the local sport scene.

He said: “Ipswich Town is my team. Can anyone have anything more enjoyable than writing about their team?

“I have got some great memories of Lower Brook Street and the people I have worked with then and now.

“It has been relentless, having a back page to fill every day for 20 years, and the first thing is to have a rest.”

Elvin also paid tribute to his “very supportive” partner Mandy for putting up with so many weekends away and late nights over the years.
