NEW Sheffield Wednesday manager Gary Megson has revealed that he turned down the chance of joining a Championship club – on twice the money he is on at League One Owls.
The former Bolton and West Brom manager was reported to have been flown to see Ipswich Town owner Marcus Evans before Paul Jewell was appointed to replace Roy Keane in the Portman Road hot seat.
Megson did not name who the club was, but it is believed to have been Ipswich although the Blues issued a statement soon after Jewell’s appointment to make clear that Jewell was their first choice.
“I turned down a club from a higher level where I would have been on double the money I’m on at Hillsborough,” said Megson.
“And I rejected interest from two other clubs as well before joining Wednesday.”
Megson’s credentials are similar to Jewell’s in that he has twice led a club to the Premier League in his case West Brom on two occasions.
Jewell took both Bradford City and Wigan to the top flight from the Championship.
Ipswich’s Under-U-15’s will play Manchester United in the academy’s annual Portman Road showcase game on Saturday May 7 with a noon start.
Last season the match, arranged by academy manager Sammy Morgan, ended in a 2-2 draw with the Red Devils winning a penalty shoot-out 4-2.
