FIREFIGHTERS tackled a chemical blaze at a Halstead factory.
The fire broke out at 11.12am yesterday in Broton Drive.
A spokesman for the fire service said two men, a 53-year-old and a 43-year-old, were taken ill and treated by paramedics after they noticed an unusual smell.
A further three were then treated on scene after suffering from exposure to the mystery gas.
Firefighters set up a decontamination unit and crews in gas tight suits entered the building to investigate.
The building was ventilated and left it in the care of the owners who will be working with the Health and Safety Executive to establish the cause of the incident and the type of gas involved.
