A PICTURESQUE windmill in the heart of one of Suffolk’s most sought-after locations has been sold for an undisclosed sum.

The EADT revealed earlier this year that Suffolk County Council was looking to sell the Grade II-listed mill in Thorpeness.

The quaint-looking building, which stands opposite the House in the Clouds and has a ground floor and two upper floors, was on the market for a guide price of 150,000.

Enquiries were being handled by Savills in Ipswich and a sale was recently arranged to a local party.

The identity of the buyer has not been made public and the mill – which is on Uplands Road and has views across the Meare and out to sea – was sold for an undisclosed sum.

It is understood the property will be fully restored over the coming year, after which it will continue to be open to members of the public, either intermittently or by arrangement.

Chris Moody, who handled the sale at Savills, said: “This is a charming building. Such is the scarcity of a windmill coming for sale that not only did the property attract substantial applicant interest but also a wide media interest.”

Originally built in 1803 at Aldringham, the mill was moved to Thorpeness and reconstructed in 1923.

It is a well-known and popular landmark and currently houses displays on the village and the surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
