Ipswich Town will play Premier League opposition in the quarter-final of the Carling Cup.

Last night’s cup games saw Championship side Burnley knocked out by Aston Villa, leaving Ipswich as the only team from the second tier left in the competition.

The complete quarter-final line-up is as follows: Ipswich, Birmingham, WBA, Manchester United, Wigan, Arsenal, West Ham and Aston Villa.

The draw is being made at lunchtime on Saturday, and many Town fans will be hoping that Ipswich land an attractive home tie against the likes of Manchester United or Arsenal. Club chiefs would also welcome the revenue boost which a big gate would produce. Other Blues supporters will be looking for a more winnable game, at home to either Wigan or West Ham.

Town’s last significant run in the league cup came in 2000-2001, when they were beaten in the semi-final by Birmingham City. This is the first time they have reached the last eight since then. Although promotion to the Premier League is very much Roy Keane’s priority, he also realises the importance of a good cup run.

In last night’s games, a young Arsenal team cruised to a convincing 4-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park, with Theo Walcott scoring twice. The north-east team have not won a top-flight trophy since 1969.

After the match, the Newcastle board issued a statement backing manager Chris Hughton, following some bizarre speculation about his future.

Aston Villa needed extra-time to see off Burnley 2-1 at Villa Park. Ex-England striker Emile Heskey put the home side ahead inside the last ten minutes, only to then concede a free-kick from which Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle levelled the scores.

England winger Stewart Downing scored the winner in extra-time, with Villa holding out despite having defender Marc Albrighton sent off.

West Ham, struggling in the Premier League, came from behind to see off Stoke 3-1 at Upton Park. Kenwyne Jones scored early on for the visitors, but Scott Parker grabbed a late equaliser before Manuel da Costa and Victor Obinna scored in extra-time. Former Ipswich loanee Mark Noble set up two of the goals. West Ham manager Avram Grant will hope that the result boosts confidence before a trip to the Emirates to take on Arsenal at the weekend.

The quarter-final ties are likely to be played on Tuesday, November 30, or Wednesday, December 1. Go to www.eadt.co.uk for news of the draw on Saturday afternoon.
