IPSWICH Town boss Roy Keane summed it up, after his side’s 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Barnsley this afternoon - “It was not a great day!” - but he refused to make any excuses.

But the pressure is mounting on the Irishman, after another sub-standard performance and bad home defeat. The Portman Road crowd booed the players off the pitch, both at half-time and full-time.

They also expressed their dismay at Keane’s decision to substitute Tamas Priskin on the hour mark, after the Hungarian had looked the most likely player to score for Town.

Not only were his side humbled at Portman Road, for the second time in a week following Derby’s win on Tuesday night, but they also picked up two more injuries.

Stand-in skipper Mark Kennedy and midfielder Luke Hyam both picked up hamstring injuries in the second half and will miss next weekend’s trip to Hull City, while David Norris and Gareth McAuley are not expected to shake off their injuries in time to play next Saturday.

“It’s where we are at, at the moment. It’s just not happening,” insisted Keane.

“It was a poor result and a poor performance. It was not a great day, because we also picked up two more injuries.

“I could make all the excuses, about the players we were missing, but we’re not looking for any sympathy.

“We’ve just got to stick at it,” added Keane,

Referring to the home crowd’s dismay at Priskin’s substitution, and also the bizarre display of applauding the Barnsley players (for a short spell in the second half) when they were passing the ball around, Keane said: “That’s up the fans.

“You’ve got to remember that the fans were very supportive of us last season.”
