Private Robert Hayes, who lived in Burwell on the Suffolk/Cambridge border, was the first British soldier to die in Afghanistan this year.
The 19-year-old was killed by a home-made bomb on January 3 while on foot patrol in Helmand province.
Private Hayes, a member of 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, was remembered during a service at St Mary's Church, Burwell.
The teenager was a well known local sportsman, and played for Newmarket Rugby Club.
