The accident happened at about 8.30pm on Saturday evening after police started chasing the van after receiving a report of suspicious activity near Ipswich Hospital.
They called off their pursuit when it started travelling at speeds of up to 60MPH in the town, but a few minutes later there was a report that it had crashed into barriers on Woodbridge Road.
Three men were seen running away from the van and were today still being sought by the police.
No one was believed to have been injured in the incident and police were today undertaking a forensic examination of the van in the hope of discovering clues to the men's identity.
