A MAN was in police custody today accused of raping a woman in Ipswich overnight.
A MAN was in police custody today accused of raping a 20-year-old woman in Ipswich overnight.
The 23-year-old suspect was arrested in the town centre around 1.30am.
He is said to come from the Exeter area.
Police say the reported attack took place in the area of the Old Cattle Market, near the Buttermarket shopping centre.
This morning an area near the tourist information centre in St Stephen's Lane was cordoned off.
Kate Rutsch, a spokeswoman for Ipswich police, said officers received a call at around 1.25am alerting them to the alleged sex attack.
Members of the public made the telephone call on behalf of the victim, who is from Ipswich.
No details have been given out regarding any injuries she may have sustained.
Today, specially trained officers will be interviewing the woman in relation to the incident in the hope of getting more information about the assault.
The man said to be involved was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
He was taken to Ipswich police station where he was held overnight.
This morning detectives were due to interview the suspect.
Police have put out an appeal for information relating to the alleged sex assault.
