EMERGENCY services were called to a Suffolk farm yesterday after a bomb was unearthed by workers digging up onions.
They were scrambled to a field off Lodge Road in Alderton, near Woodbridge, after police were called at about 9am.
Officers cordoned off the scene, while a bomb disposal unit carried out a controlled explosion on the device, believed to be a wartime bomb, at about 11.45am.
Onlooker Gerard Sykes said: “There have been people taking up onions in the field recently. The bomb disposal unit arrived and they cleared everything away from the area.
“They dug a hole, put sand bags around it, put a charge down and blew it up.”
