THE Essex Young Farmers' Country Show has kept crowds happy for more than 30 years - and yesterday's annual event didn't disappoint.

The agricultural show was hailed a success by organisers despite changeable weather conditions.

Held at Boyton Hall, in Roxwell, near Chelmsford, the show is organised by the 11 young farmers' clubs from across Essex, with members aged between 16 and 26.

Attractions included trade stands, a craft hall and a forestry area where demonstrations of coppicing and tree felling took place.

Kate Smith, a member of the show committee, said the day had gone very well and estimated 10,000 visitors had come which was an increase on last year.

"Numbers were up on last year despite the weather which was really good," she said.

"One of the most popular things would definitely be the lifestock area where the kids get to have real interaction with the animals.

"We had bee keepers, Llamas, pigs, sheep, goats and turkey chicks.

"It has taken a week to set up and it will take around the same time to clear it all away so it has been a lot of work."

Hungry visitors headed to the food court and farmers' market to sample an array of local produce including cheese, herbs and fruit juices.

In the exhibition hall, young farmers showcased their talents including cooking, painting and sewing along the theme of The Seasons and Climate Change.

Steam enthusiasts could enjoy traction engines, stationary engines and a traditional merry-go-round in the steam area.

The main ring was kept busy with displays from the Wandsworth Police Dogs, CJ's Falconry and the young farmers' tug of war with Chelmsford winning the girls' competition and Maldon A team being the male champions.

There was also equine dentistry, a farrier and a Pony Club demonstration.

All the money raised from the event will go towards the running costs of the young farmers' club throughout the year.
