The 69-year-old was the Test Match Special scorer and statistician from 1966, and won a place in the hearts of cricket fans around the world.
Late commentator Brian Johnston dubbed him 'The Bearded Wonder' for his incredible knowledge of the sport.
It is believed he contracted the disease which killed him in Dubai, where he had been on a tour with the Lord's Taverners.
