The former Stowmarket Woolworths sign is up for sale.

The six-metre-long sign is going up for auction later this month at Bishop & Miller Auctioneers' Dr Atomica’s Journey into Cool auction.

Stowmarket's Woolworths closed its doors in 2008.

The sign is expected to exceed its auction estimate of £150-250.

East Anglian Daily Times:

Managing Director, Oliver Miller, said: "We have never come across anything like this in the auction world before, having a local connection to Stowmarket and such an iconic brand as Woolworths."

The lot is being sold on behalf of somebody from the local area who regularly sells advertising signs and is a collector of local items.

The sign had been sat against a shed after it was bought by the seller through a third party who acquired the piece directly from Woolworths when they were undertaking refurbishment work prior to them closing down for good.

Mr Miller added: "I mean who didn’t love Woolworths? Everyone has memories of going into the store in Stowmarket High Street and getting their pick'n'mix. I certainly have fond memories of doing this with my nan.

"We are expecting this to attract such interest not only from Woolworths fans, local collectors to Stowmarket who just want to own a bit of the town’s history but also those people who collect advertising signs.

"Being such an iconic brand, coming from Stowmarket and generally being such a great advertising sign we are expecting good interest and for it to exceed its auction estimate of £150 - £250. It’s just a really cool thing to own.

"Advertising signs is a market that is on the up and we continue to see growth with all advertising signs and even more so when they have a local tie to our auction house.

"We love seeing the relics of our town."

The sign will be up for auction on Wednesday, November 30 at the Stowmarket saleroom.
