A demonstration against nuclear weapons is set to take place outside a Suffolk air base this weekend.

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) supporters will gather outside RAF Lakenheath on Saturday to oppose the return of US nuclear weapons to NATO bases in Europe.

The assembly will take place between 1pm and 3pm at Gate 8 of the base.

CND leaders said there will be a rally with speakers and live entertainment.

A similar protest happened in May earlier this year, with "hundreds" of supporters gathering at the base after reports that RAF Lakenheath was set for a multi-million dollar infrastructure upgrade, according to CND.

Kate Hudson, CND General Secretary, said: "The return of US nuclear bombs to Britain and the spending of millions of dollars on upgrading NATO bases across Europe only undermines further the possibility of lasting global peace and security.

"The US is the only country to host nuclear weapons in other countries and appears willing to sacrifice these hosts in the event of a nuclear war with Russia.

"Whether it’s the UK’s own nuclear weapons in Scotland or US ones in Suffolk, the presence of nukes in Britain doesn’t make us any safer – they make us a target.

"CND’s message is loud and clear: US nuclear weapons are not welcome back in Britain, and we will campaign with all our might to stop them."

A spokesman for RAF Lakenheath said: "We are aware of and monitoring the CND Protest.

"RAF Lakenheath has always been and continues to be committed to defending lawful freedom of speech and expression.

"However, anyone who unlawfully enters RAF Lakenheath will be detained by MDP."
