A 62-year-old lorry driver who was over the alcohol limit when he was pulled over on the A14 in Suffolk has been handed a suspended jail sentence and banned from the roads.

Police were called to junction 44 at Bury St Edmunds on Saturday after receiving reports of an HGV swerving in the road.

The driver stopped the vehicle on the slip road, and no one was hurt in the incident.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre for questioning.

Nigel Hodges, of Yew Tree Road in Attleborough, was charged with driving whilst over the alcohol limit, namely 127mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit being 35mcg.

He appeared before Suffolk Magistrates' Court on Monday and was convicted of the charge.

Hodges was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months.

He was also banned from driving for 48 months and ordered to pay costs of £250.
