Dogs of all colours and breeds will soon descend on the county, as Suffolk Libraries unveils a brand-new, canine-based art trail.

The ‘PAWS-itivity’ art trail will see 45 dog sculptures created by local artists in each of Suffolk’s libraries this summer. Each dog can then be sponsored by a local business or organisation.

The dogs will set up home in their individual libraries following a tour of Suffolk at a number of events, including a launch at the Suffolk Show. They will then return to Trinity Park to be auctioned in late September.

Dogs have been chosen for this art trail because of the positive effect the man's best friend can have on mental and physical health. It is thought that dogs can help to reduce isolation and encourage their owners to take regular exercise.

Some Suffolk Libraries even run ‘reading dog sessions’, where children can practice reading to therapy dogs without fear that their reading skills will be judged.

Among those supporting the project is Lisa Papp, author of the children’s book Madeline Finn and the Library Dog. One of the 45 dogs will be named Bonnie, and will act as a sponsor for the event.

Lisa said: “I love the stance that Suffolk Libraries has taken to be a real gift to the community, and to make a real difference in people’s lives.

“I’m wishing Suffolk Libraries lots of luck in raising funds for such a vital charity, as libraries are where the real magic happens.”

Bruce Leeke is the chief executive at Suffolk Libraries. He said: “We’re delighted to be launching this exciting new project to bring fun and colour to people across Suffolk, whilst also raising much-needed funds to support the work of our charity.

“We hope lots of local businesses, artists and people will want to help us raise ‘pounds for hounds’ this summer, and enjoy our pack of delightfully designed dogs!”

Funds raised from this project will go towards the work Suffolk Libraries does in communities, which includes nurturing literacy, improving health and wellbeing, and creating accessible arts opportunities for local people.

The project is a joint endeavour between Suffolk Libraries, Pets as Therapy, Realise Futures and Suffolk Pride.
