A Suffolk wildlife charity is now a quarter of the way to hitting its fundraising goal of £1m for a new nature reserve.

Suffolk Wildlife Trust has received support from 1,700 people and has collected £250,000 for the so-called 'Martlesham Wilds'.

The trust wants to turn the 300-acre site on the banks of the River Deben into ‘a wild place that will be of immense value to local people and wildlife,’ as the land opposite the Sutton Hoo Anglo Saxon burial site is rich in nature and history.

The Deben is a popular feeding ground for a variety of bird species, including shelduck, curlew, lapwing and redshank.

The proposed nature reserve has been the site of an organic farm for many years, home to plants, animals and invertebrates.

Michael Strand, the trust's community fundraising manager, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity of support from people across Suffolk. This milestone keeps us right on track towards our fundraising target, so thank you to everyone who has contributed so far."
