A planning application to make upgrades and repairs to Bury St Edmunds train station has been submitted to West Suffolk Council.

Greater Anglia has proposed the removal of the car wash office to "improve the outlook of the northern façade" and they are looking to re-use this space for new cycle storage for passengers.

This would entail space for approximately 52 bikes, with 16 of these spaces placed in a secure area behind an internal security door.

The application also details the protection of the existing station fabric by replacing old "unfit for purpose" roofing materials and repairing platform two to prevent water ingress into the retail unit below at ground floor level.

The station is Grade II listed by Historic England, under the station's original name of Northgate Railway Station.

Previously, the site underwent a number of changes in 2020, including the refurbishment of the booking hall, partial demolition of internal walls and sliding doors for the northern entrance.
