Bellringers from Ipswich's civic church have retained their position as the best in the region at this year's annual competition.

The ringers from St Mary Le Tower church won the East of England Twelve-Bell Striking contest which was held at Chelmsford Cathedral and where they competed against teams of ringers from across the region.

Their victory meant they retained the trophy they won last year at Waltham Abbey.

Jonathan Williamson, who helps organise the ringers, said the success showed how well the 12-person team worked together.

He said: "We are very pleased - we went to Chelmsford and finished top, even above the cathedral's own team who are there every week.

"It's like winning a big away game!"

Bellringing has been enjoying something of a revival over the last few years - and this year is expected to be very busy for the team.

Mr Williamson said: "We weren't able to practice during the lockdowns, but since we have gone back there have been a steady stream of people wanting to join us."

The team practices every Monday for about two hours - the first hour from 7pm is for new members and people getting to grips with the bells while the second hour gives the team the chance to work together.

The bells have been a feature of the Tower for more than 300 years and current vicar Rev Tom Mumford said they had an important part in its life.

He said: "Bellringing is a very English institution and our team is a real part of the fabric of the town. We're very proud of their achievement in winning this."

This is the start of a big year for the ringers - in May they expect to be taking part in many events to mark the Coronation of King Charles III and 2023 is also the centenary of the Suffolk Guild of Bellringers with special events planned to mark the anniversary.
