An award-winning butcher from Steeple Bumpstead is starting up her own business, called 'Raise the Steaks', at just 21 years old.

Mia Tamburrini, 21, first entered the world of butchery when she started a Saturday job in November 2019.

After leaving sixth form in February 2020, she went straight onto complete a qualification in retail butchery.

Miss Tamburrini then moved on to work at Morgan's Butchery in Halstead and was given the chance to complete her advanced qualifications.

"I passed last June, which was a year earlier than they were expecting, with a distinction," she said.

"It was very hard work, but it was all worth it."

Her efforts were recognised at the Worshipful Company of Butchers Awards, held in London last week, where she was awarded with the Best Meat Apprentice with Management Potential and Champion Meat Apprentice of the Year.

"I was thrilled to win," said Miss Tamburrini.

"I take great pride in having these titles to my name."

Off the back of her success, she is now taking the next step in her career by starting up her very own business, called 'Raise the Steaks'.

Miss Tamburrini will be opening a cutting unit on a friend's farm from Sudbury and will be posting regular updates on her progress from her Instagram account, @raisethesteaks_.

In her experience within Suffolk and Essex, she has built a network of independent farmers who very often have rare breeds.

"I kept telling my friends that if you know what to do with this meat, it can sell very well," she said.

"So I just decided to open up my own business doing this."

Miss Tamburrini is very passionate about "keeping it local" and says she hopes to support plenty of local independents with her new shop.
