A 66-year-old man from Aldeburgh has drafted an 84-year-old triathlon champion in to help him train for his solo 483 mile fundraising challenge.

Jos Whately-Smith, 66, will be starting his mammoth challenge on Thursday, April 27, where he will walk from the Pyrenees to Santiago.

He is fundraising for Parkinson's UK, in honour of his older brother David who was diagnosed with the condition four years ago.

Mr Whately-Smith said: "Before his diagnosis, David loved walking and playing golf - he was incredibly active.

"Because of Parkinson's, these are things that David finds really challenging now.

"His speech and mobility have been drastically affected by the condition, yet he still navigates life with such grace, spirit, courage and good humour."

To help in his mammoth fundraising challenge, Mr Whately-Smith will be trained by 84-year-old grandfather of two Gordon Merfield, who is a qualified athletics coach and British triathlon champion.

Mr Whately-Smith hopes to raise £15,000 to find a cure for Parkinson's - a disease which has such a debilitating impact on his brother.
