Two men who tried to rob a vulnerable man in Stowmarket town centre have been given jail sentences totalling six years.

During the late night incident in the town’s High Street, JJ Goodrum ordered the victim to hand over his money and was caught on CCTV aiming a “powerful” kick at his face and rifling through his bag, Ipswich Crown Court heard.

Meanwhile his co-defendant Jordan Smith also went through the victim’s bag and put his hand over his mouth to stop him shouting for help.

The men ran off empty handed, leaving the victim with injuries including a black eye and cuts and bruises on his hands and knees.

Goodrum, 29, of Goldsmith Road in Ipswich, and Smith, 32, of no fixed address, admitted attempted robbery overnight on August 31 and September 1 last year and they also each admitted being in breach of a suspended sentence order.

Jailing the men for three years each, Judge Nicola Talbot-Hadley said the victim was vulnerable and must have been terrified during the incident.

She said the men had put their hoods up during the attack.

Nicola May, for Goodrum, said he had been badly affected by the death of his father and had since started misusing alcohol.

Since being in custody he had done a number of courses and had enhanced status in prison.

Lynne Shirley, for Smith, said her client had been drinking and taking drugs before the attempted robbery and had undiagnosed mental health issues.

She said he now recognised how badly he had acted and was ashamed of his behaviour.

Since being in custody, he had taken part in drug and alcohol awareness courses.
