A man was left for dead in a pool of blood after an “unprovoked, senseless and violent “ late night attack in a Suffolk town centre, it has been alleged.

The victim, who had been staying with a friend in Park Lane, Newmarket, following the death of his wife, suffered a traumatic brain injury, facial fractures and a fractured shoulder during the incident and spent more than a month in hospital, Ipswich Crown Court was told.

Before the court are Nicholas Carter, 33, of Waterloo Close, Newmarket, and Joshua Durrant, 30, of Barksways, Burwell.

They have both denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent in August 2021.

The court heard that on the evening in question the defendants had allegedly been involved in an argument at the Bushel pub in Newmarket with a woman friend of the victim, said James Onalaja, prosecuting.

Outside the pub Durrant and Carter allegedly overheard the woman asking the victim to come to the pub to walk her home and they had allegedly set off towards Park Lane to meet him.

Mr Onalaja claimed that although the defendants’ journey from the pub to Park Lane was captured on CCTV the alleged attack wasn’t recorded on any footage from the night.

After the alleged attack, the defendants had bought bottles of water from a shop and were allegedly seen washing blood off their hands and shoes.

The victim of the alleged attack was found lying in a pool blood with serious head and facial injuries on a pavement with his feet in the road by a motorist who called the emergency services.

He was taken to Addenbrookes' Hospital, Cambridge, where he was found to have bleeding and bruising around his brain, facial fractures and a fractured shoulder.

Mr Onalaja claimed that Durrant and Carter had carried out an “unprovoked, senseless and violent “ attack on the alleged victim and had “left him for dead “.

He said they were linked to the attack by "an array of circumstantial evidence ".

The trial continues.
