Residents of a Suffolk town will be able to sponsor a plaque dedicated to their loved ones as part of a new memorial garden set up to remember the fallen from the First World War.

Bereaved relatives in Saxmundham will be able to pay £100 for a plaque on a tree in the garden as part of the town's Memorial Field, which was launched in November.

Saxmundham town councillor Tim Lock, who has taken a lead role in getting facilities for the Memorial Field, said the sponsorship scheme would help to raise money for works taking place at the site.

He said: "People can remember a husband, wife, brother, sister or loved one."

Other developments taking place at the Rendham Road site include the planned installation of an automated water supply, while planting has also been taking place in preparation for the spring.

The site includes decorative bespoke gates commissioned from a local craftsman to welcome visitors into the new space, while there is also a new information board, a memorial plinth and benches set into the garden to allow quiet reflection.
