A family has paid tribute to their hardworking, fun-loving husband and father, who tragically died after an accident at home last year.

Edward Charlson, from Felsham near Bury St Edmunds, died on June 25, 2022, aged just 53.

His wife, Lindsay Charlson, paid tribute to Mr Charlson in a statement read before Suffolk Coroners' Court.

Her husband, she said, was true family man. The couple shared one daughter, Sophie, and Mr Charlson was a loving father and partner.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and took great pride in being a welcoming host at family barbeques.

Mrs Charlson said that her husband was remarkably fit and healthy for a man of his age. He was an active man, who enjoyed cycling and “the occasional bench-press”.

He was also known for being an exceptionally hard worker with a keen eye for detail, which he applied to all aspects of his life.

At the end of a long week, Mr Charlson enjoyed going fishing, an activity which would help him unwind before spending the weekend with his wife and daughter.

Mrs Charlson said that the day of his death was like any other, and the two of them had packed the car in readiness for an evening fishing trip.

The court heard that Mrs Charlson was in bed when she heard a loud crash, and discovered her husband lying at the bottom of their staircase with glass around him from a shattered picture frame.

Paramedics attended the scene and Mr Charlson was transferred to Addenbrookes Hospital by air ambulance. However, the injuries to his brain were too severe for him to be saved.

Senior coroner Nigel Parsley recorded a conclusion of accidental death.

He offered his condolences to the Charlson family, and said that, from the moment Mr Charlson sustained his injuries, there was nothing anyone could have done.
