Two Suffolk couples who are celebrating special wedding anniversaries have shared their secrets to long and happy marriages.

Sally Root, 78, and Trevor Root, 81 toasted their 60th wedding anniversary while Peter Widing, 87, and Molly Widing, 86, celebrated reaching 65 years of married life together at their care home Glastonbury Court in Bury St Edmunds.

Both Mr and Mrs Widing were born in Suffolk and it was almost love at first sight when the pair met at a dance.

Mrs Widing arrived at the dance accompanied by another young man, but keen to spend more time with her, Mr Widing ensured he escorted her home.

The next day, he won her over after playing an impressive game of cricket.

Commenting on their long and happy marriage, Mr Widing said: “We just clicked! I can’t remember a time where we rowed or said a cross word to one another – we just clicked in everything we do.”

Mr and Mrs Root also met a local dance club in Cambridge in 1959 where the pair fell head over heals for one another.

They went on to get married four years later and together they have three children, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Commenting on the secret to a long and happy marriage, Mr Root said: “I’ve learned to always admit that Sally is right – and to do as I’m told.”

Ana Mihai, home manager at Glastonbury Court, said: “Here at Glastonbury Court, we love any excuse for a party – so Peter and Molly, and Trevor and Sally’s wedding anniversaries certainly called for double the celebrations and double the fun.

“Marking such special occasions at the home allowed many of the residents to reminisce and share fond memories of their own wedding days – it was lovely to hear their stories too.

"Happy anniversary to Peter and Molly, and to Sally and Trevor.”
