Man released after van flipped into house in Long Melford

Officers were called to the crash, which involved a Peugeot van, in Plough Lane at about 9.30pm on Saturday. 

The van, which overturned, had two people inside. The passenger was unhurt and the driver suffered minor injuries which did not require hospital treatment.

The driver was then arrested on suspicion of drink and drug-driving offences.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said the driver was taken to Bury St Edmunds police investigation centre for questioning and his since been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue.

After the crash there were renewed calls for changes to make the road safer. 

Councillor for Long Melford John Nunn said: ”This is a sad situation and my thoughts go to the residents of the damaged property, I was pleased to have helped the residents affected by sourcing a tarpaulin from JRL Scaffolding to protect their property.

“Together with Long Melford parish council and the local Suffolk County councillor we have been trying to get speed reduction measures in Bull Lane for the last five years - sadly with no success so far.

“There are other factors involved which are currently being considered and I am contacting the council to see if off-street car parking can be provided in the gardens of people living in Bull Lane.”
