Five generations united to celebrate a Leiston woman's 100th birthday - with the help of two alpacas.

Hilda Woodhead celebrated her milestone surrounded by her family, including her great-great-grandson born only last year, at St Barnabas Care Home in Southwold.

Much to her delight, she was also joined by a rabbit, a guinea pig, a skunk and two alpacas from Unicron Alpaca Walks in Shipmeadow.

Her daughter Pat Swatton said: “Mum thinks her secret to long life is by keeping active and she now spends her time taking short walks on Southwold Common, as well as reading and doing various puzzles, but most of all playing Scrabble and the board game Upwords with the Care Home staff.

"I would like to thank St Barnabas Care Home who have helped to make the day extra special for her by arranging a family meal, a visit by schoolchildren and the surprise appearance of the Alpacas."

The avid Manchester United fan was also thrilled to receive a goody bag from the club, as well as a mention in their matchday programme.

After leaving school in 1939, Hilda - who was born in Knodishall - went to work at Leiston Post Office.

But as the war progressed, she was sent to work in the wages department at the Hoffman's Munitions Factory in Chelmsford - a role she disliked due to the long hours and no talking.

Back in Suffolk, she joined the local dance band as a pianist, and it was here she met her future husband Arthur.

The couple married in 1944 at St Lawrence's Church in Knodishall before making their home in Leiston, where they stayed throughout their 66 years of marriage, with daughter Pat.

Hilda played countless services, weddings and funerals as organist at Leiston St Margaret's Church, and also set up the church's short mat bowls club.

John Last, chairman of Leiston cum Sizewell Town Council, visited Hilda on her birthday to present her with flowers and a card on behalf of the town.
