A group of friends were inspired by a terminally-ill Suffolk mum to complete a 50-mile walk in support of a charity tackling brain cancer.

The five friends of Sigi Mermagen, from Witnesham, travelled to Fife in Scotland for the Follow the Seagulls charity trek in aid of brainstrust, which aims to help people beat brain cancer.

The two day trek took place on April 15 and 16 and involved a 50 mile walk with other fundraisers, which has so far raised £5,764 of the £12,000 target.

In September, the EADT reported how friends had organised a fundraiser and helped to create the new garden at the home of Sigi, who was diagnosed with two rare brain tumours and given 18 months to live.

The outdoor area included a new patio with space for dining and coffee tables, as well as a sofa and a wheelchair ramp.

She had been diagnosed with a glioblastoma following a seizure in which she felt her eyes flickering and found she was unable to control her movements.

Surgeons at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge were able to remove one of the tumours, but the second could not be removed due to its position in the brain.

One of the fundraising walkers, Lynda Bradford, said: "It is to fund brainstrust, which is a specialist charity that provides support, lobbying and research into all things brain tumour related.

"We are aiming to raise as much as we can via this link and have already exceeded our target, following donations from Sigi’s many friends and family, but more money is always needed for this underfunded organisation."
