A Suffolk man has smashed a Guinness World Record after completing the London Marathon in memory of his brother.

Martin Gear, of Newmarket, completed the London Marathon on Sunday dressed as an air ambulance after crews helped his brother following a crash last year.

Mr Gear said: "It was amazing, especially for the air ambulance because it's very close to heart because last year my brother came off his motorbike and they were one of the first on scene.

"Sadly he passed away two weeks later so the run was in memory him."

The time to beat for the fastest marathon dressed as a three dimensional aircraft for a man was four hours and twenty three minutes and Mr Gear completed it in four hours and three minutes.

He said during his seventh London Marathon his wife face-timed him to say that he needed to speed up to make sure he would beat the world record.

"As soon as I went over the line I found out," Mr Gear said.

"They are there to greet you at the start to check all the costumes.

"Once it is on it is not allowed to come off. Not even for the toilet.

"At the finish line they check the costume and take a picture with you holding the certificate."

During the race Mr Gear stopped eight times to have a drink and it was the first time he wore the costume.

"I didn't train in it and the heat was unbelievable," he added.

"It's the most incredible day and you would not get the times you do if it wasn't for the crowd.

"All the way around the communities are out with their sound speakers and children are giving you sweets. It's just amazing."

Mr Gear said he had retired from running the London Marathon but signed up again three years ago following the death of his mum.

Mr Gear has raised over £6,600 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
