The Green Party has stormed to a convincing victory in the Mid Suffolk local elections - securing their first outright local authority in the country with 24 seats.

High-profile Local Conservative councillors, including current council leader Suzie Morley (Stonham) and Tim Passmore (Palgrave), lost their seats as the Conservative Party saw its numbers slashed from 16 in 2019 to just six.

For the Greens, on the other hand, it was a historic day that saw them increase their representation from 12 seats in 2019 to 24.

Leader of the Mid Suffolk District Council Green Party Andy Mellen said the result had been “a long time coming”.

“It’s really amazing to have finally got here,” he added.

“The challenge now is to make a difference. Being in power is very different to being the opposition.”

The Local Conservatives, as they were called in this election, were the victim of a trend that has swept across the country – with the Tories suffering steep losses in both Suffolk and England as a whole.

Outgoing Conservative council leader Suzie Morley, who lost her Stonham seat to the Green Party’s Nicholas Hardingham, pointed towards issues at both a local and a national level.

“I’m very sad but life goes on,” she said.

“There are problems locally but the national picture hasn’t done us any favours over the last few months.

“People are fed up.

“We used to say that your money and the economy was safe with the Conservatives. Once you’ve lost that it is very hard to get back.

“But we will keep going and hold the Greens to account on everything they have promised.”

The final results of the Mid Suffolk District Council election also saw the Liberal Democrats secure four seats – while Labour, Independents and Reform UK won zero.
