A yoga teacher who has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) has told of her experience being invited to a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Jo King, who lives in Monewden, near Framlingham, delivered Joe Wicks-style remote sessions to youngsters throughout Covid.

Her efforts to get more children active saw her recognised in Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Honours last year, and she was awarded a BEM for services to the community in Suffolk.

Mrs King attended a garden party inside the Palace gates on Wednesday, May 3 with her father, Brian.

While at the event, she saw King Charles and Camilla as they were preparing for the coronation as well as Clare FitzRoy, Countess of Euston, the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk.

Mrs King said: "It was a long queue to get to the Palace gates but it was really worth it. It was a really special moment to walk through them with my dad.

"I met some great people there who have all done some amazing things.

"We were standing in the garden with Camilla on one side and King Charles on the other. It's only now sinking in."

At the start of the Covid pandemic, Mrs King was approached by several primary school headteachers as they looked to provide their pupils with a form of release and a distraction from the stress of learning from home.

Mrs King, who had to adapt and teach virtually on platforms such as Zoom, swiftly became popular with her students, who affectionally called her "Yoga Jo".

When she discovered she was being recognised with a BEM last summer, she dedicated the gong to the children she had taught over the pandemic.

She added: "I felt I was there for all of the children.

"They have embraced it and I hope we can continue to move forward with yoga being on the curriculum."
