A Suffolk pub is going completely cashless as part of a nationwide trial from pub giant Greene King.

Of the 24 Greene King-managed pubs in Suffolk, just one is set to become part of the trial - the Red Lion in Martlesham.

Customers booking online will be notified in advance of the new payment style while in-person visitors will be told by staff members.

A spokesman for Greene King said: "We're undertaking a trial in a small number of our pubs where around 90% of customer spend is made via card payment.

"This is a trial and we have not made a business decision to permanently go cashless in this small number of pubs, or any other of our pubs, at this stage."

In accepting card payments only, The Red Lion will be joining the Freston Boot, which was the UK's first pub to go cashless in 2018.

At the time, landlord Mike Keen said the benefits of switching to card payments only were "huge" and the system went viral with Russian and Australian media outlets picking up the story.
