Community leaders have expressed their shock after police discovered a body in woodland – just months after another similar incident in the town.

A police cordon was put in place in Combs Wood, south of Stowmarket, after a body was found at about 6.30am on Tuesday.

Suffolk police has confirmed the death is being treated as "unexplained" and an investigation into the incident has been launched.

No further details, including the age and sex of the deceased, have been released so far.

It comes after the body of a man was found in a church graveyard near Violet Hill Road in the mid Suffolk town on the afternoon of Thursday, February 23.

The death of the man was also being treated as "unexplained" by police at the time.

Speaking after the discovery in Combs Wood, Nick Gowrley, the recently-appointed mayor of Stowmarket, expressed his condolences to the family of the person who had died.

He said: "It is quite shocking. It is very unfortunate to hear about this news.

"We know there was another body found earlier in the year, but we understand they are not related in any way. The police have not sent out any further details, as far as I'm aware.

"It is never nice to hear about this sort of thing. Our thoughts go out to the family.

"If there is anything the town council can do to help the family, we will do all we can. They only need to get in touch."

Terry Lawrence, Mid Suffolk district councillor for Needham Market, which includes Combs Wood, added: "My concerns and thoughts are with all the friends and family of the person who has died."

Officers are asking that anyone who was in the Combs Wood area between 5am and 6.30am on Tuesday or has any information related to the incident to get in touch.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Suffolk police, quoting reference CAD 31 of May 23.
