A former pub in a Suffolk village will be turned into three homes after planning permission was approved.

The plans to convert the Five Bells pub in Great Cornard, near Sudbury, were approved by Babergh District Council on Wednesday.

The appliacation was submitted to the council in February after the pub closed down in September

Late last year the pub was seen to be back on the market with a six-year tenancy available.

Plans were revealed last year to build four bungalows behind the pub in Bures Road.

Work on the four semi-detached bungalows has already started.

The pub has been boarded up for the last couple of months and the sign has been taken down above the door.

There were fears the pub would be knocked down to make room for the three homes

However, David Clarkson, who is the agent for the applicants 20 Gainsborugh Ltd, said the building would not be knocked down.

He added: "We will keep the facade the same and the street scene the same.

"The place was in quite a considerable state of disrepair so we will be bringing the building back up to modern standards."
