The inquest into the death of a man who remains were found in a river has been suspended. 

The remains, known as body C, were discovered in bags by the River Stour in Sudbury on August 27, 2020.

The identity of the man is not yet known.

The inquest was also suspended until September 8. 

Divers from the Metropolitan Police conducted extensive searches of the river and the remains was confirmed to be from a male.

Two post-mortem examinations were conducted by the Home Office on August 29 and September 4 2020.

Officers did reveal that the victim was a man, probably of "athletic or muscular build", and have since established through specialist forensic work that he was likely to be aged in his late 50s to early 60s and was about 5ft 6in tall.

A murder investigation was launched and criminal investigations continue.

A timeline of events 

August 27, 2020 - Police were called to the River Stour, near Meadow Gates and Croft Bridge, by a member of the public. 

August 29 and September 4, 2020 - A Home Office post-mortem investigation began and was not able to establish a cause of death or any form of identification.

September 4, 2020 - Detective Chief Superintendent Eamonn Bridger said further forensic tests have revealed the remains are that of a man, probably of athletic or muscular build, but the force does not yet have a complete body.

He said the death was not recent.

Several weeks later - A small amount of additional human remains were recovered as a result of searches of the river in the week after the bags were found, with DNA testing of these remains confirming that they are from the same person as the original discovery.

Police revealed last year the victim may have died between 2008 and 2012.

Further test results indicated the victim was a white male, approximately 5ft 9ins tall, of medium build and north European.

May 25, 2021 - Officers arrested a 26-year-old man from Sudbury in connection with the inquiry.

He had remained under investigation but will face no further action at this time as confirmed by police in August this year. 

August 2022 - Police release a witness appeal ahead of the two year anniversary with images of potential witnesses released. 

The pair were seen walking two dogs and pulling a shopper trolley bag along Melford Road in the town on Wednesday, August 19 2020.

The police said the two people were being treated as potential witnesses who may be able to provide information to assist the inquiry and are not suspects.
