A Suffolk mum whose daughter has been left bruised and traumatised after she was struck by a car while walking to school has called for a crossing on the "dangerous" road.

Bibi Anderson-Jones, 13, of Ridgewell, was walking in Cavendish Road, Clare, on her way to Stour Valley Community School on Monday, June 12, when she was hit by a car as she crossed the road.

Onlookers described her being "thrown in the air" on impact and now Bibi's mum Amanda Anderson is calling for further safety measures to be implemented on the 30mph road.

"She has been incredibly lucky. An eyewitness reported that she was thrown in the air and the windscreen of the car was smashed and the bonnet was crumpled, so it was a substantial impact," Ms Anderson said.

"If the impact had been her head or anything like that it would have been a lot more severe."

Bibi can remember crossing the road and believes she was struck just as she reached the other side, but said she did not see the car coming.

An ambulance was called to check over her injuries, which were minor, and Amanda was also informed.

She said: "It was horrendous to hear something like that, your stomach just drops to the ground.

"I am pretty good at dealing with stress, I'm pretty chill and grounded but when you get that call to say that your child has been struck you just panic thinking, 'is she okay?'"

Amanda has now called for changes to be made to the road, which is used every weekday by hundreds of children walking to school.

"I think a crossing or a reduced speed limit or some sleeping policemen is definitely needed there," she said.

"The school told me this is the fourth incident on the road and the second one this year. Bibi's has been the most severe so far, I believe.

"I think that the road is a severe accident waiting to happen. Someone should not have to be seriously hurt or to die for changes to be made," she added.

Cllr Nick Clarke, who represents Clare on West Suffolk District Council, said he believes the road is very dangerous and added that he has previously pushed for measures to be brought in.

"The speed limit needs extending further towards Cavendish and, with the prospect of another estate on the other side of the road, I will be pushing for a mini-roundabout at the school to slow down traffic," he said.

"Our thoughts go out to the young lady and her family. Anything we can do to improve safety has got to be a priority. Children should be able to get to school safely."

Cllr Bobby Bennett, who represents the area on Suffolk County Council, said: "This must have been a very frightening incident for all involved and I wish the student a speedy recovery.

"I have been in touch with the school, the police and Suffolk Highways and have asked that we work together quickly to understand how the accident happened and what we can do to keep children safe on the walk to school."
