A pilot involved in a plane crash at a Suffolk stately home was well enough to attend a country fair at the estate, which attracted 10,000 visitors at the weekend.

The airman visited the Heveningham Hall Country Fair just a couple of days after he had been airlifted to Ipswich Hospital when the Grumman FM2 Wildcat he had been flying overturned on landing at the country estate.

He was described as having 'serious injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing,' by police following the crash on Thursday, but had made a sufficient recovery by the weekend to be able to attend.

The aircraft he had been flying was due to be part of the line-up of vintage planes performing for the public.

Fire crews from Harleston, Princes Street, Ipswich, Framlingham and Lowestoft South were called to the incident, which happened at 5.10pm.

Alongside the country fair, there was also the 'Heveningham Concours' featuring displays of vintage cars that line up on the terraces at Heveningham Hall.

Prizes were awarded for the best pre-war, post-war and supercar, while driver James Nicholls reached 117mph in a Ferrari 488 Pista Spyder during 'Horsepower Hill', a drag race for owners and visitors on a special course within the hall's grounds.

Aircraft also took part in the fair while there were also set to be performances by horses, vintage tractors and a falconry show.

Proceeds from the event went to charity.

The event also showcases food produced in East Anglia, while there is also a sheep show, a bungee jump, a 15th century re-enactment group and a performance by the Suffolk School of Samba, which specialises in Afro-Brazilian percussion and dance.

Max Hunt, chair of the judging panel for the Concours, said: “It was another really popular Concours with some amazing cars and a huge number of visitors to the Country Fair as well.

"Once more, we can truly say that we had something for everyone. Our aim with the event has always been to create something special for visitors that benefits the local community too, and I think we can say that we managed to achieve that once again.

"A huge thank you to everyone who came and helped to make the event the success that it was.”
