A major new business park is being planned to regenerate a derelict "eyesore" east Suffolk village site that has become a hotspot for crime and vandalism.

If approved, Rendlesham Business Park will feature a new church and 17 units for start-ups, which will be built on former RAF Bentwaters land to the south-east of the A1152 at Rendlesham.

Ben Brumby, a director of the business park, said levels of vandalism had "ramped up" recently, while there had been problems with drug use at the site and one of the buildings was set on fire.

"It would be lovely to clear the site. It is a bit of an eyesore, it is a crime hotspot. I think a lot of the local teens hang out there and the windows have been smashed up. Recently, the level of vandalism has been ramped up," he added.

A public consultation about the plans for the park is set to be held at Rendlesham Community Centre between 6pm and 8.45pm on Wednesday, July 26.

The front of the site is set to provide a new home for Sudbourne and Tunstall Baptist Church, which currently meets at Rendlesham School, but is looking for a more suitable site for its facilities.

To the rear will be the business units, which are aimed at smaller companies and start-ups.

"It could be someone who is selling something out of their spare room or garage and that is growing and they need more space," Mr Brumby added.

The property developer, who runs East Coast Homes, believed there was a market for smaller units aimed at fledgling companies.

Currently, the plans are at the pre-application stage in preparation for a full application to be submitted to East Suffolk Council.

The land was previously a satellite site for the RAF base and provided bomb-proof buildings and a communications centre for the military.
