A science-fiction book about war with Mars got the cogs turning in Halesworth and inspired something 'fantastical'.
Chris Day started building contraptions ten years ago and has been featured at many events across East Anglia.
It was the start of Chris Day's Fantastical Contraptions.
Since then he has evolved the way he builds thing to adds more of his own style.
"It's not really steampunk, it's a little bit more subtle," he said.
The steampunk style dates back to the Victorian Era. It predicts what the world would have been like had the Victorians conquered modern technology.
His first piece was The Tripod, inspired by the H.G. Wells novel The War of the Worlds.
It was created with The Prince's Trust, with Chris teaching children how to make things through the construction of the 3.5 metre tall contraption.
Everything is manufactured with raw materials.
The gas fired pyrotechnic tripod is one of the most popular contraptions that Chris has built.
"People are intrigued by how it words," Chris said, explaining more about The Tripod.
Almost five years ago Chris built the Bird Box Expresso Bar to raise more funds.
The coffee bar serves freshly ground coffee and can be hired for weddings, corporate events, and festivals.
The contraption part of the coffee bar is the large metal bird which towers at the front of the box.
"People stand with it to take photos," said Chris. "It's great to see people enjoying what I love".
Chris' next project is buidling a trailer which is more subtly themed than his previous contraptions.
The Fire Garden and Bird Box Expresso Bar will be at upcoming events, including the Maui Waui festival on August 25-27 in Norfolk.
