The finalists for the EADT Business Awards 2023 have been announced.

Being Bury St Edmunds born and bred, I know how lucky we are in Suffolk; blessed not only with our beautiful skies and landscape but also with the spirit of innovation and determination which has always been strong in our rural county.

This year’s harvest has not been fun for our farmers – as I write this, I am looking at a story headlined: Will it ever stop raining? – but I think our farming heritage is what makes the people of Suffolk so good at dealing with difficult and unexpected situations and to keep coming out stronger on the other side.

We’ve had more entries at this year’s awards than ever before – an amazing 140 – which reflects just how much talent we have around here to shout about.

A huge well done to all our finalists. It shows the incredible talent of your business to be included in this shortlist, and I am eager to find out who this year’s winners will be.

Our theme this year is people. I’m proud of that. It’s been a tricky year for us at the East Anglian Daily Times because we have been mainly working from home while our new office is refurbished.

Trying to keep up morale while working remotely isn’t easy, but we’ve had a good year, particularly with the launch of our new digital subscriptions, and that is because of the tenacity and drive my team continually displays.

I’m nothing without their efforts. I know you will all understand exactly what I mean.

I’m very much looking forward to meeting you all at our awards ceremony at Milsom’s Kesgrave Hall on Thursday, September 28 where we will be supporting this year’s chosen charity, the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) – turn to page 15 to find out more.

Huge thanks to Milsom’s for being our venue sponsor and to Paddy and Scott’s, last year’s winner of Suffolk Business of the Year, for sponsoring the drinks reception.

Our headline sponsors are, once again, the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce and Sizewell C. Thank you again for their support with these awards, which would not be possible without them.

Catherine Johnson, president at Suffolk Chamber of Commerce had this to say: “As partner of Birketts, a business founded in Suffolk, it is of utmost importance to me that we shout about how our businesses thrive here and that they are recognised for their hard work, innovation, people empowerment and sustainable legacy.”

Steve Carroll, supply chain engagement lead at Sizewell C, added: “A business is nothing without its people, each and every employee plays their part in making a business successful.”

This year’s host at the awards ceremony will be comedian Jen Brister, whose current tour is called The Optimist – how very apt.
