Fire crews have closed a key route through a Suffolk town while they tackle an incident this morning.

A stretch of London Road in Halesworth has been closed due to an ongoing fire.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service was called to a reported overhead cable fire at around 7.40am on Wednesday.

The crews attending discovered that an electricity cable had burnt through, detached itself from a house and was hanging across the road.

The residents living in the property affected were evacuated, but have since been granted access back into their home.

Four crews are on the scene, including appliances from Wrentham, Halesworth, Bungay and Beccles.

Traffic is queuing in both directions along the A144 London Road from Bramfield Road to the B1123 Roman Way.

The road closure will remain in place while the fire service waits for UK Power Network to make the cables safe.
