Printing firm Denny Bros has been named the winner of the Environmental and Sustainability Award, sponsored by Port One, at the EADT Business Awards 2023.

Denny Bros is an independent, employee-owned specialist printing company headquartered in Bury St Edmunds.

Founded in 1945, Denny Bros is a proud Suffolk business and has passed on its strong values and staff focus through the generations.

From its purpose-built production headquarters, Denny Bros uses state-of-the-art machinery and top industry standard accreditations to decipher new and imaginative ways to meet a variety of clients’ on-product communication needs.

Last year, 1,800 solar panels were installed on the roof of the headquarters and Denny Bros was awarded Suffolk Carbon Charter Gold status.

The business’ strong commitment to the environment and family-oriented ethos also mean that it has achieved strong staff retention.

The judges noted that the business “has a clear strategy for reducing its environmental impact and achieving net zero” and said that it “has done a stand-up job of modernising in a green way”.

They were particularly impressed with how Denny Bros has “expanded its environmental strategy”, in particular its use of data to track its environmental performance in line with its targets.

Graham Denny, managing director of Denny Bros, said that winning the award is “recognition of the environmental journey we’ve been on over several years now; recognition of the effort of our team.

“The staff have all been involved in the journey and this one is for them!”
Commercial director Ashley Simpson added: “We are a green company and we’re very proud of it.

“We are manufacturers. We know we can achieve green energy and be as carbon neutral as we can and that’s our long term goal [while] also doing it in an ethical manner and looking at more ways we can be more efficient.”

He concluded by saying that Denny Bros “couldn’t be more proud”.

About the sponsor

Port One is set to be the largest logistics park in the UK, spanning an impressive 4.5 million sq ft area within the next two years. Once complete, the park will provide 21st-century carbon-neutral warehousing and storage solutions, with quick and easy access to the main routes in and out of all east and south coast ports.

Nine warehouses and over 700,000 sq ft of e-commerce activity already operate on the sustainable logistics park as it begins phase two development. New, purpose-built units will have additional structural mezzanines and will provide acres of solar panels supplying 100% power as well as charging points for EVs and forklifts for tenants.

Nedging Hall Estate in Semer, near Hadleigh, is a family-owned estate comprising restaurants, pubs, country houses and a brewery. It is involved in several wildlife schemes and has planted more than 46,000 trees and 35km of hedgerow.

The judges said Nedging Hall is “working towards positively impacting its environment by communicating directly with farming, grants and suppliers”.

Radical Waste

Radical Waste is a recycling, waste management and skip hire company based in Beccles.

It powers most of its activity through solar panels, and it is poised to build a combined heat and power plant for all its recycling activities.

The judges praised Radical Waste’s “radical and thoughtful approach to trying to reprocess dry waste produced by businesses.”

Spectra Packaging

Spectra Packaging in Halesworth is a plastic bottle manufacturer serving the cosmetics, toiletries and personal care sectors.

Last year, it moved to using prevented ocean plastics made from discarded bottles in its products.

The judges said: “It is very clear that this business is focused on the world around us and what it can do to protect the future and innovate new ideas”.
